Hi,
7:10:43 system() failed: No such file or directory.
Increase the log level ("debug 9"). It will tell you what program mgetty
is calling here - read: what was compiled in as FAX_NOTIFY_PROGRAM.
A policy.h file sounds like it would be used in compiling a new version
of Mgetty. Since I don't have policy.h where would I add the
FAX_NOTIFY_PROGRAM line?
If you have the source bundle, you have a policy.h-dist, and you have
a "README.1st". Guess what this is for :-)

I don't have the source bundle. I did read the README.1st and clicked
through the link to mgetty.greenie.net reading the receiving faxes
section which again points to policy.h or policy.h-dist.
I changed debug from 8 to 9 but don't see any difference in the log when
I receive faxes.

I reloaded mgetty after changing the /etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config

Here's the log:

Hi,

A policy.h file sounds like it would be used in compiling a new version
of Mgetty. Since I don't have policy.h where would I add the
FAX_NOTIFY_PROGRAM line?
If you have the source bundle, you have a policy.h-dist, and you have
a "README.1st". Guess what this is for :-)
I don't have the source bundle. I did read the README.1st and clicked
through the link to mgetty.greenie.net reading the receiving faxes
section which again points to policy.h or policy.h-dist.

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but this is still "debug 4" level
(maybe you added the "debug 9" to an inactive "port" section in the
config file).

Try adding "-x 9" to the command line in /etc/inittab - this will
override whatever is in the config file.

Here's the mgetty.config
# direct connection of a VT100 terminal which doesn't like DTR drops
#
#port ttyS3
# direct y
# speed 19200
# toggle-dtr n
fax-id 973 697 4443
fax-owner root
port /dev/modem
debug 9
fax-id 973 697 4443
speed 115200
init-chat ATM0DT
port-owner ppp
port-group pppusers
port-mode 0664
These config statements will never be used, because they are behind
a section "port /dev/modem" - but your mgetty is running on "ttyS0".

This will never ever be evaluated, because the "port xxx" statement
must be without "/dev/" - and of course it must be the very same
device node that's put on the mgetty command line (ttyS0, without /dev/)

Hi,

A policy.h file sounds like it would be used in compiling a new version
of Mgetty. Since I don't have policy.h where would I add the
FAX_NOTIFY_PROGRAM line?
If you have the source bundle, you have a policy.h-dist, and you have
a "README.1st". Guess what this is for :-)
I don't have the source bundle. I did read the README.1st and clicked

All the while I thought the /dev/modem was how mgetty was working. I
guess it was using compiled defaults.
I changed the port statement to just say port ttyS0, of course then the
modem refused to answere because of the init-chat statement a few lines
down.
I commented that out along with the port-owner, port-group and port-mode
statements (I had at one time been set up to allow dial-in PPP).

The log below is post changes. You'd indicated we'd be able to get the
fax notify issue resolved without recompiling but didn't get into
details (probably
because you'd found the /dev/modem issue.

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but this is still "debug 4" level
(maybe you added the "debug 9" to an inactive "port" section in the
config file).

Try adding "-x 9" to the command line in /etc/inittab - this will
override whatever is in the config file.

All the while I thought the /dev/modem was how mgetty was working. I
guess it was using compiled defaults.
I changed the port statement to just say port ttyS0, of course then the
modem refused to answere because of the init-chat statement a few lines
down.
I commented that out along with the port-owner, port-group and
port-mode statements (I had at one time been set up to allow dial-in
PPP).

The log below is post changes. You'd indicated we'd be able to get the
fax notify issue resolved without recompiling but didn't get into
details (probably
because you'd found the /dev/modem issue.
Hi,

(as a side note: the e-mail address that you're using is unreachable, so
I get bounces for every mail I send. Somewhat annoying)

Well, here you go - this is the command that mgetty calls after a fax has
been received: /etc/mgetty+sendfax/new_fax.

Try calling this with the same arguments from the command line:

# /etc/mgetty+sendfax/new_fax 0 'Behringer Corp.' 1 /var/spool/fax/incoming/ffa1dd49aS0-Behringer-Corp.01

(mind the quotes)

to easily see where the errors come from.
