Hi,
I have a probelm with receiving of faxes. Looks like it's stucked.
mdm_read_byte error, does someone now, what does it mean?
switchbd is set to 0 in mgetty.conf file.
mgetty says "switchbd is set to 19200" (either via policy.h, or via
mgetty.config) - and I tend to believe mgetty here.

Make sure it's set to "switchbd 0" in mgetty.config, and then re-run
mgetty, with "-x6", to be sure what's going on.
In /var/spool/fax/incoming is many files, but damaged (??)
incoming # ls
fn14aa466S1.01 fn1875d71S1.01 fn1e40c90S1-420-37-7927131.01
fn173d877S1.01 fn18a6109S1.01 fn3745959S1.01
fn1874520S1.01 fn18f779bS1.01 fn3be1e49S1-420-567333575.01
fn18746d8S1.01 fn1ade455S1-420-48-5122432.01
fn1874a46S1.01 fn1dc0eb1S1-420-48-5122432.01
What makes you think these files are damaged? They look normal to me.
04/21 15:51:44 yS1 >> 'switchbd' option in 'mgetty.config' (currently set
to '19200')
04/21 15:51:44 yS1 >> try using 'switchbd 0'
If mgetty says so, switchbd is set...

Hi,

What does it mean "NO DIALTONE" (remote fax is working and receiving faxes
from other machines)?
Well, NO DIALTONE means "your modem did not hear a dial tone".

The dial tone is the "tuuuuuut" sound you hear when you pick up the phone
- do you need to dial some specific numbers, like "0", to get an outside
line?

as Gert already wrote, modems wait for a dialtone before dialing by default.
If there is never a dialtone, you could initilize your modem with ATX3
(I bet, this is described in mgettys docu :-)

That should result in NO CARRIER, not in NO DIALTONE - the latter is the
"I am not even *starting* to dial, because this phone line is not ready
to be used" error code.

Whether or not the remote fax is quiet or not happens *after* dialing,
and NO DIALTONE happens *before* dialing.

If the modem sends NO DIALTONE *after* dialing, then the modem is just
broken and needs to go into the big bin.

Switch on the speaker and listen for the tones it makes when you dial out
- will tell you what's going on.
